Qualification Description

The AUR40226 Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis reflects the role of experienced automotive technicians who perform advanced diagnostic tasks in the automotive retail, service and repair industry.

Students develop the skills and knowledge required to identify, test and diagnose complex faults across a range of light-vehicle mechanical, electrical, safety and electronic management systems.

Complex faults may include intermittent faults, multi-system faults, faults introduced following previous repairs, and faults caused by interactions between different vehicle systems.

Skills You Will Develop

During this course, students will develop skills in:

• diagnosing complex faults in vehicle systems;
• developing and applying diagnostic testing strategies;
• using specialised diagnostic tools and equipment;
• interpreting manufacturer specifications and technical information;
• analysing test results and identifying the cause of faults;
• diagnosing complex petrol and diesel engine faults;
• diagnosing braking, steering and suspension faults;
• diagnosing automatic transmission and driveline faults;
• diagnosing engine-management and vehicle-safety-system faults;
• documenting findings and making appropriate repair recommendations; and
• applying environmental and sustainability practices in an automotive workplace.

Entry Requirements

Mandatory Qualification Entry Requirement

Applicants must have:

• completed an automotive mechanical Certificate III qualification; or
• demonstrated equivalent automotive mechanical competency.

The Certificate IV is a post-trade qualification designed to build upon an applicant’s existing automotive mechanical skills and experience.

UTA Institute of Technology Admission Requirements

Applicants must also:

• normally be at least 18 years of age at the time of commencement;
• have completed Australian Year 11 or an equivalent overseas qualification;
• undertake UTA Institute of Technology’s pre-training review;
• undertake any required language, literacy and numeracy assessment;
• have sufficient digital literacy to access learning materials and complete assessments; and
• be physically able to participate safely in practical automotive workshop activities.

Admission is subject to assessment and approval by the UTA Institute of Technology Admissions Team.

The tuition fee covers scheduled training and assessment for the course.

The materials fee contributes to course learning resources, consumable materials and practical training resources.

To achieve the AUR40226 Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis, students must successfully complete 10 units of competency, consisting of:

Elective units are selected by UTA Institute of Technology in accordance with the qualification packaging rules, training-package requirements, industry consultation, available facilities and the intended vocational outcome.

Unit selection may be updated where permitted by the training package and applicable regulatory requirements.

Qualification Outcome

Students who successfully complete all required units will be issued:

AUR40226 Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis

The qualification is nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework.

A student who does not complete the full qualification may be issued a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for each unit of competency successfully completed, subject to satisfying all assessment, identification and issuance requirements.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of Prior Learning may be available to applicants who can demonstrate relevant existing skills and knowledge gained through:

• formal training;
• informal learning; or
• other relevant automotive industry experience.

Granting credit transfer or Recognition of Prior Learning may reduce the amount of training required. It does not automatically guarantee a reduction in the published course duration or fees.
