Information about the Unique Student Identifier (USI)
What is a USI?
A Unique Student Identifier (USI) is a 10-character alphanumeric code assigned to each student undertaking nationally recognised training in Australia. It is a student's individual education identifier for life. If you are a new or continuing student enrolled in any nationally recognised training, including at UTA Institute of Technology (UTAIT), you must have a USI. Without a valid USI: • You will not be able to receive your Statement of Attainment or qualification. • You will not have access to your VET transcript, which records all your nationally recognised training outcomes in one secure online location.
Legislative Framework
The USI initiative is supported and governed by the following Commonwealth legislation: • Student Identifiers Act 2014 • Student Identifiers Regulation 2021 (updated version of the 2014 regulation) • Student Identifiers (VET Admission Bodies) Instrument 2015 • Student Identifiers (Exemptions) Instrument 2018 • Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2025 (superseding the 2015 standards) Under this framework, UTAIT is not permitted to issue a qualification or Statement of Attainment unless a USI has been provided by the student and verified by the RTO.
Role of the student identifiers registrar
The Student Identifiers Registrar is a Commonwealth statutory officer established under the Student Identifiers Act 2014. The Registrar is responsible for: • Administering the USI initiative across Australia; • Ensuring the privacy and security of student records; • Maintaining and verifying the national USI system; • Being appointed by the Commonwealth Minister for Skills, in consultation with state and territory skills ministers.
Is the training at UTA IT accredited by the government and recognised by industry?
Is the Training at UTA Institute of Technology Accredited? Yes. All training delivered by UTAIT is: • Nationally recognised, and • Delivered by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) approved by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA). This ensures that your training is government-accredited and recognised by industry, both in Australia and overseas.
IRecognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal process that recognises your previous skills, knowledge, and experience — whether gained through work, life experience, or prior study. RPL at UTAIT helps: • Fast-track your qualifications; • Prevent unnecessary duplication of learning; • Ensure efficient use of your time by focusing only on new competencies.
