The skill set targets automotive mechanical and electrical technicians who require the skills and knowledge to service, diagnose and repair, and retrofit and modify automotive air conditioning and HVAC systems in an automotive workplace.

These units of competency are drawn from AUR20220 - Certificate II in Automotive Air Conditioning Technology/Automotive Retail, Service and Repair Training Package and meet the needs of automotive mechanical and electrical technicians, after the completion of this skill set the trainees will receive awards for the statement of attainment, AURSS00044 – Vehicle Air Conditioning Service, Retrofit and Repair Skill Set

Licensing requirements

  • The licence with this qualification (Restricted Refrigerant Handling licence)
  • Users are advised to check with the relevant regulatory authority. An Australian Refrigeration Council (ARCtick)
  • This qualification does not include overhaul air conditioning compressors unit.
  • This qualification does not include Installing new air conditioning systems for a vehicle without systems.

Trainee Licence

  • A refrigeration and air conditioning (RAC) trainee licence is required for a person handling refrigerants while undertaking training and/or assessment leading to a National Quality Council-endorsed refrigeration and/or air conditioning qualification for the classroom and work-based training only.
  • The completion of this qualification enables an individual to apply for an AAC02 – Refrigerant handling licence – qualified persons (Automotive air conditioning licence).
  • UTA Institute of Technology holds a refrigerant trading authorisation certificate from the refrigerant council under the ozone protection and Synthetic Greenhouse gas management regulations 1995,

3 unit studies equivalent to 10 working days of theory and practical classes

  1. AURETU103 Service air conditioning and HVAC systems
  2. AURETU104 Diagnose and repair air conditioning and HVAC components
  3. AURETU105 Retrofit and modify air conditioning and HVAC systems

The Qualification

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who perform a range of tasks relating to servicing and repairing air conditioning components and systems of cars and heavy vehicles in an automotive service and repair business.

Career Pathways

The completion of this qualification enables an individual to apply for an AAC02 – Refrigerant handling licence – qualified persons (Automotive air conditioning licence).

Skill Set Target Group (AURSS00044)

The skill set targets automotive mechanical and electrical technicians who require the skills and knowledge to service, diagnose and repair, and retrofit and modify automotive air conditioning and HVAC systems in an automotive workplace.

Students who complete the skill set program will be issued a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment.

Materials and PPE

Students must bring their own personal protection equipment and computer to the scheduled training session. Personal protection equipment must include a minimum of steel cap shoes, safety glasses, and overall or equivalent.

Entry requirements

  • Completion of year 11 or equivalent. (Subject to the assessment and approval of the UTA Institute of Technology Admission team.)
  • English requirements: IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL PB 506, TOEFL IBT 62, PTE Academic 46, CAE & CPE (from
    2015) 162.
  • Applicants must be 18 years of age and above Successful completion of Pre-training review (PTR) LLN Level 3
