 Overview

The AURSS00044 – Vehicle Air Conditioning Service, Retrofit and Repair Skill Set is designed for automotive mechanical and electrical technicians who want to gain the essential skills and knowledge to service, diagnose, repair, retrofit, and modify automotive air conditioning and HVAC systems in vehicles.

This nationally recognised program is drawn from the AUR20220 Certificate II in Automotive Air Conditioning Technology, part of the AUR Automotive Retail, Service and Repair Training Package.

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Statement of Attainment and become eligible to apply for an AAC02 – Refrigerant Handling Licence (Automotive Air Conditioning Licence) issued by the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARCtick).

 Course Outline and Study Details

 Units of Competency (3 Units – 10 Working Days of Study)

  1. AURETU103 – Service air conditioning and HVAC systems
  2. AURETU104 – Diagnose and repair air conditioning and HVAC components
  3. AURETU105 – Retrofit and modify air conditioning and HVAC systems

Training includes both theory and practical sessions delivered face-to-face in our modern automotive workshop located at 58 Newlands Rd, Reservoir, VIC 3073.

 Skill Set Target Group

This skill set is ideal for:

  • Automotive technicians currently working in mechanical or electrical service and repair roles.
  • Individuals seeking to upgrade their skills and obtain an ARC Refrigerant Handling Licence.
  • Workshop professionals wishing to expand their capabilities in vehicle HVAC systems.

Students who complete this program will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).

 Licensing Information

 Restricted Refrigerant Handling Licence

Graduates are eligible to apply for an AAC02 – Refrigerant Handling Licence (Automotive Air Conditioning Licence) through the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC).

Important notes:

  • This qualification does not include the overhaul of air conditioning compressor units.
  • It does not cover installation of new air conditioning systems in vehicles that do not currently have one.
  • UTAIT holds a valid Refrigerant Trading Authorisation Certificate under the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Regulations 1995.

 Trainee Licence Requirement

Before handling refrigerants during training, all participants must apply for a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (RAC) Trainee Licence.

  • This licence is mandatory for both classroom and workplace-based training.
  • Your trainer will assist you during orientation with the ARC Trainee Licence application process.
  • The trainee licence fee is approximately $30, payable directly to ARC.

 Qualification and Career Pathways

After completing the AURSS00044 Skill Set, students can progress to:

  • The completion of this qualification enables an individual to apply for an AAC02 – Refrigerant handling licence – qualified persons (Automotive air conditioning licence).

Graduates are equipped for employment in roles such as:

  • Automotive Air Conditioning Technician
  • HVAC Service Technician
  • Automotive Mechanic specialising in HVAC systems

 Materials and PPE Requirements

Students must bring their own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and laptop to all practical sessions.
PPE must include:

  • Steel-cap safety boots
  • Safety glasses
  • Overalls or workshop-appropriate clothing

 Entry Requirements

To enrol in this course, applicants must meet the following criteria:

1️ Academic and Age Requirements

  • Completion of Year 11 or equivalent.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older at the time of enrolment.

2️ English Language Requirements

For international students:

  • IELTS: Overall score of 5.5
  • TOEFL (PB): 506  TOEFL (IBT): 62
  • PTE Academic: 46  CAE/CPE (from 2015): 162

3️ Pre-Training Review (PTR)

  • All applicants must complete a Pre-Training Review (PTR) at or before orientation.
  • This ensures the course suits your goals, skills, and previous experience.

4️ LLN (Language, Literacy & Numeracy) Assessment

  • A mandatory LLN assessment (minimum Level 3) must be completed before commencement.
  • This ensures you have the necessary communication and numeracy skills to succeed.

5️ Interview Requirement

  • Applicants may be required to attend a course interview with the UTAIT Admissions Team.
  • The interview assesses your readiness, motivation, and understanding of the course expectations.

6️ ARC Trainee Licence

  • You must apply for your ARC Trainee Licence before handling refrigerants.
  • UTAIT will guide you through the application process during orientation.
